Acupuncture

Veterinary acupuncture has been used for over 3000 years to treat a variety of conditions. Paws of the Rockies Animal Hospital offers acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy to maintain your pet’s health or to treat a specific disease. The doctors at Paws of the Rockies Animal Hospital believe that a “whole body” approach to maintaining health and treating disease is important, integrating Western therapies as well as alternative methods of medicine.

Acupuncture involves piercing the skin with tiny needles at specific “points” on the body. These points correspond to particular nerves in that area. The nerves then stimulate the spinal cord and brain to produce many beneficial effects. These points can also be stimulated with heat (moxibustion), massage (acupressure), or techniques that utilize electrical stimulation.  Acupuncture has been shown to reduce inflammation, improve healing, reduce pain, and improve blood flow to the areas targeted.  There are multiple conditions for which acupuncture may be used. These include, but are not limited to diseases such as asthma, arthritis, back pain, constipation, gastrointestinal disease, neck pain, post-operative pain, muscle weakness/ pain, immune-mediated diseases like allergies and lupus, urinary tract disorders such as cystitis, and behavioral diseases like compulsive or anxiety disorders.

Once a thorough medical workup of the problem has been achieved, acupuncture can be used alone or in conjunction with traditional therapies to provide your pet with optimal wellness and health.
