Dental Care Is A Yearlong Project

Many pet owners know about the specials veterinarians run during National Pet Dental Health Month in February. But in order to keep your pets’ teeth in good condition, it is important to continue home dental care throughout the year.  Good oral hygiene starts with home brushing with an enzymatic toothpaste.  Paws of the RockiesFor many owners this can seem like a daunting task.  It shouldn’t be.  Many dogs are attracted to the flavored toothpaste and enjoy licking it off the toothbrush.  It takes a couple back and forth movements on the outer surface of the teeth to be considered “brushing.” This takes much less time and is much easier than the circular motion on each tooth at a certain angle, like we are used to learning about from our own dentist.  In all reality, tooth brushing your dog or cat should only take a minute or less.  What a great way to bond with your pet, while doing something that is good for them too!

Murphy and Max Drage are great examples of how well home dental care works.  They are 3.5 year old Yorkshire Terriers that have not yet needed a professional dental cleaning. Their owners brush the dogs’ teeth daily, which has helped to keep their teeth a beautiful white and their breath smelling good.

Most small breed dogs are prone to plaque build up due to the crowding of all their teeth in such a small space.  And many of these small breeds also need a dental cleaning by their first birthday!  Max and Murphy, however have no build up on their teeth and will most likely not need a professional dental cleaning for many years!
